Since its founding in 1996 by Dr. Timothy Redman, professor emeritus of literature, the chess program has become one of the signature aspects of UT Dallas. The UT Dallas chess team makes an historic 20th appearance in the President’s Cup and has won the tournament four times in 2001, 2002, 2007 and 2008. They have won the Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Championship 10 times.

Webster has won the President’s Cup six times, the Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Championship 10 times and holds more than 80 other national titles. In 2023, Webster won both the Pan-Ams and the President’s Cup with a perfect score and was presented with the 2023 College of the Year award by US Chess. Webster is also the first University in the United States to offer a minor in chess.

Chess has been an important part of UTRGV and has acted as a metaphor of the vast human potential that its region holds. The UTRGV chess team has won three President’s Cup Tournaments (2018, 2019 and 2021). In 2018 and 2019, UTRGV was named “The Chess College of the Year” by the United States Chess Federation. In recognition of the spectacular successes, the UTRGV chess team was invited to the Texas Capitol in Austin in 2019 and was honored by the Gov. Greg Abbott, the Texas Senate and the House of Representatives.
